28 Days of Black Cinema: Day 4

    February 5, 2015

What's Love Got To Do With It (1993)

Starring: Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne, Jennifer Lewis, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Khandi Alexander

    Directed by Brian Gibson

Written by Tina Turner(book), Kurt Loder (book), Kate Lanier (screenplay)

"I just believe that anything is possible. You know, anything. Now, it took me a long time to get Ike out of my system. And now that I've done that, I'm ready. I'm ready and I know what I want." - Tina

Let me preface this by saying, Angela Bassett is my spirit animal and I never tire of seeing her onscreen. So, there may be a bit of a bias. Also, since Angela has played just about every iconic black woman, on film, there is a possibility she will show up in this list again.

This is the story of Tina Turner (Angela Bassett) and her rise to stardom while struggling to break free from her abusive husband, Ike Turner (Laurence Fishburne). Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett KILL it as Ike and Tina Turner. Angela gives EVERYTHING and leaves it right there on the celluloid for us to take in and digest. I'm not going to bore you with the specifics. Just go watch the movie.

    Seriously.

Tina gets a taste of creative independence.

P.S.If you're a Scandal fan, you'll get a chuckle out of seeing Mama Pope as one of Tina's back up singers.
