"Sister can't fly with one wing." - Sister
I first saw this version of Sparkle, maybe in the 5th grade. Well before the 2012 remake. Probably before Jordin Sparks was even born. This is the story of three sister, Sparkle, Sister and Dolores. They are all living at home, with their mom, played by Mary Alice. It's very evident that they were all brought up with a certain set of morals that Sister seems to be moving away from, quickly.
Sparkle is dating Sticks (Philip Michael Thomas) who is motivated and looking for a way to use his musical talents to get him on the track to success. That's when he decides to start a musical group, starring the three sisters, called "Sister and the Sisters". Sister gets a tiny taste of success and things go down hill, fast.
Sparkle, the youngest, holds Sister up on a pedestal and just ends up hurting her when she should be helping.
There are a couple of really good songs in the movie. And if you remember, En Vogue re-recorded "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" as well as "Hooked On Your Love". Check out the three versions of "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" and then go watch Sparkle.
En Vogue 1992
(Look close and you will see Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Johnny Gill, Dorian Harewood, and El DeBarge in the all male audience.)
And we can't leave out the Queen Of Soul, Aretha Franklin's version, which was recorded for the movie's soundtrack in 1976.
